| Professor Kennedy is a leading liver specialist and his work in viral liver disease is known internationally. Trained at University College Dublin, he completed post-graduate training in London and was appointed as a Senior Lecturer at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2009. He has produced novel work redefining disease phase in Chronic Hepatitis B (CHB) and the main focus of his research work is around broadening treatment candidacy and the development of individualized treatment strategies for viral liver disease. He is widely published in the field; with over 200 publications and >120 peer reviewed articles (h-index 49). In addition to multiple book chapters, he has also edited a textbook on Hepatogastroenterology. |
| As a Consultant Physician and Hepatologist, Professor Kennedy is at the forefront of improving patient care. He is passionate about patient education and ensuring that patients play a central role in their own medical management.
He is the inventor of HepB&Me, a management app designed for both patients and healthcare practitioners. A current focus of his research is expanding the utility of patient-management tools to empower patients and improve clinical care. Professor Kennedy is the founder of Leaders in Liver Health, a specialist clinic dedicated to the rapid assessment of liver health and the delivery of the highest standards of personalised care. He has a particular interest in the management of liver disease in young people and is well recognised for his work with Premiership football clubs, as well as for managing liver disease in professional sportspeople and elite athletes from the UK and internationally. |
His national and international roles include serving as an expert advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO), where he contributed to the HBV clinical guideline development group. He was also a member of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) HBV Clinical Practice Guidelines panel (2025), and has previously served on the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) viral hepatitis guideline committee. He provides expert opinion to the United Kingdom Advisory Panel (UKAP) on blood-borne viruses and is the current Chair of the British Viral Hepatitis Group, as well as former Lead of the British Association for the Study of the Liver (BASL) HBV Special Interest Group. More recently, he has acted as an expert advisor to the Infected Blood Inquiry.
Professor Kennedy works closely with industry and provides expert input into drug development programmes. He is Chief/Principal Investigator for multiple investigator-led and commercial phase I–III clinical trials of novel therapies in viral liver disease, and currently leads clinical trials focused on innovative treatments for hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis delta virus (HDV).
